Crystal Bowl Sound Healing

Sound Healing workshop at Saints Green Place, Dunmow

So what happens during Sound Healing?

The sound healing journey lasts around 60min, I ask people to lie down on a mat with a blanket, pillow, bolster and eye pillow. We set an intention for the session while taking deep breaths. This may be 'I open myself up to receive unconditional love and joy' or 'I allow myself to receive what I need and let go of the rest' or anything else that feels aligned for the session. I give a brief explanation of what happens during the journey - all sounds are part of the journey, you will drop into a deeper level of consciousness approximately every 7 minutes, the bowls are made of clear quartz crystal which stores and amplifies energy and let them know that I will leave them in silence at the end of the session before bringing them back with my voice. I then begin to play the bowls with a combination of gentle strikes of the side of the bowls and playing them around the rim. This creates a harmonious, enveloping sound scape that reverberates around the room. Often people fall asleep or go into a deep relaxation. After around 40 minutes, I gently bring my playing to a close and leave everyone to enjoy 5-7 minutes of silence before gently bringing them back into the room with some deep breaths. I ground everyone by repeating the mantra "I am safe and in my body", and then encourage people to bring their hands onto the soles of their feet before coming up to a seated position. We seal our practice either with a mantra, chanting ‘Om’ or by breathwork. I encourage drinking water and grounding feet on the earth to integrate the practice and reground the body. People can experience feeling a little out of sorts afterwards or feel Euphoria or deep relaxation - sometimes a little of each.

The Science of Sound Healing

Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary - a neurologist, neuroscientist, Ayurvedic Practitioner and Sound Medicine expert states that our cells have "antennae-like structures...called cilium that receive and respond to vibrational energy fields, such as sound, light and radio frequencies."

She believes that it is because our cells have these cilium that our physical bodies and mental states are impacted so positively by sound healing. Chaudhary explains that the basis of sound healing is that everything in the universe vibrates on a specific frequency; but stress, trauma and illness can disrupt these natural frequencies leading to disharmony in the body and mind. She goes on to explain that sound healing introduces specific tones, rhythms and vibrations which bring the body back into balance by recalibrating its energetic field.

Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, director of Medical Oncology and Integrative Medicine at the Cornell Cancer Prevention Centre in New York states:

"If we accept that sound is vibration and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies." He believes that sound can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.

Soul Sounds Collection by Paige Collins:

States that sound is energy that travels through waves of vibration and affects us on a physical and psychological level by:

1. Brainwave Entrainment - a process where sound therapy influences brain activity. By listening to certain sound frequencies, our brainwaves begin to synchronise with those frequencies.

Eg- exposure to lower sound frequencies of 4-8Hz (Theta waves) can induce deep relaxation or meditative states whereas, higher frequencies of 12-30Hz (Beta waves) can enhance focus and alertness.

2. Vibrational Resonance - when the body is exposed to certain frequencies, it can resonate with them, similarly to when a tuning fork vibrates in response to the right note. Sound therapy can help to bring these vibrations into harmony, allowing the body to return to a state of balance, particularly when dissonant vibrations (caused by stress or trauma) are present.

3. The Nervous System and Stress Reduction - studies have shown that sounds can directly influence the autonomic nervous system, regulating our fight and flight response. Sounds with slow, rhythmic patterns can activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest state).

4. Cellular Healing and the Physical Body- vibrations from sound can penetrate the body on a cellular level. Research suggests that sound frequencies can influence cell functions, improving circulation and aiding the body's healing processes

My bowls are made of clear Quartz which is said to store, amplify and transmit energy. Clear Quartz is known as the ‘Master Healer’, said to bring mental clarity and balance. It is associated with Sahasrara - the Crown Chakra - which governs higher consciousness and spiritual connection to the divine. My bowls are all sharp notes which relate to healing the Endocrine system, specifically the Pituitary gland, Thymus/Heart Heart and Solar Plexus. I was drawn to the Endocrine bowls as I found the frequency to be clearing and sound slightly higher/more uplifting than the fundamental notes.

Where can I experience sound healing?

All upcoming events will be listed on my website and social media accounts however, please contact me if you would like to attend a workshop or have a private sound healing journey with me. I love to share sound healing and its myriad of benefits so am always happy to organise extra workshops!

Disclaimer - sound healing is not a replacement for conventional medical treatment and should support, not replace treatments recommended by your GP, consultant or medical professional .

Last Spring, I trained as a Crystal Bowl Sound Healer with beautiful soul, Holly Husler. I found the 12 week immersive course to be incredibly informative and deeply healing.

Sound Healing has in fact, been around for centuries. The Egyptians built the pyramids in a way that amplifies sound waves for healing purposes. Pythagoras; known as the ‘father of sound’, noticed when hearing a blacksmith strike metal hammers that alongside the fundamental notes were overtones - extra notes that fan on top of the basic notes.

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of foetuses and body tissues. And sound waves have more recently been used to destroy cancer cells. Sound healing is, quite rightly, being hailed as 'the medicine of the future'.

There is no question that sound frequencies are deeply healing and have a profound affect on the body.
